Flavour

Sweet orange, lime, fresh pine and caramel.

A healthy kick of hops, with enough malt character and body to make it satisfying. Smooth drinking, without overpowering bitterness.

Pale ale malt, Munich malt, medium crystal malt, Motueka and Chinook hops.

Modern West Coast-inspired IPA. Citrus and pine hop character, a drier satisfying finish.

Where it started

Our founder Jamie isn’t usually an IPA person. But the American West Coast IPAs he enjoyed when he first got into craft beer stuck with him. They were big, punchy beers, with bold hop character and a little caramel sweetness and body to balance it out. That combination just hit the spot.

When it came time to make an IPA for JKB, Jamie wanted to take inspiration from those beers and put his own spin on it.

Most of the beers Jamie brewed at home were maltier styles, so he didn’t have an existing IPA recipe to build from. He started from scratch in the garage, brewing four versions and trying different hop combinations to work out what came together to make a beer people would genuinely enjoy drinking.

When Jamie took the recipe to the professional brewery, they realised the beer was going to be more bitter than he intended. So he worked with the brewer to move more of the hops towards the later stages of brewing, where they could bring more of that punchy hop flavour and aroma without letting bitterness take over.

The goal was to take the parts of those old-school West Coast IPAs Jamie loved and turn them into an IPA that you would enjoy drinking.

What if an IPA was more than just hops?

We wanted to make an IPA that was easy to enjoy, but still had something behind all that hop character. Some hoppy beers can feel a little thin, with not much else going on beyond the hops. We wanted ours to have a bit more substance, with the malt and body playing their part too.

And while we wanted plenty of hop flavour, we didn’t want bitterness taking over. The aim wasn’t to make the biggest, boldest IPA possible. It was to make the most enjoyable IPA possible.

The result?

A West Coast-inspired IPA with plenty of hop character, and enough substance to make it feel like a complete beer.
