As proclaimed by every lager and Pilsner ever, On The Pils is also a crisp and refreshing Pilsner.

By giving ours a little extra attention with a mid-boil flavour hop addition, and some extra malt, we’ve made ours just a little less ordinary.

Easy enough for sunny afternoons, friends and family around, Friday fish and chips, or BBQs when you want something cold, crisp and uncomplicated.

But this one is interesting enough that you won’t get bored after the first one.

Crackers, light nuttiness and a background of lemon-lime.

Experience

Light-bodied, crisp and refreshing, with a firm bitterness and a clean finish.

Main Characters

Pilsner malt, Munich malt, Motueka hops and Czech Pilsner yeast.

Style

Pilsner - the OG pale lager. Pale, crisp, clean, easygoing, bitter and uncomplicated.

Where it started

Our founder, Jamie didn’t really appreciate lager when he first got into beer. Learning about the history, tradition and skill that goes into making a good one changed that.

As a homebrewer, he wanted to try making a Pilsner for himself to really see what it took. But being someone who likes beers with plenty of flavour, he wanted to see if it was possible to make one that still felt exciting while staying within the realms of what a Pilsner is.

When JKB Brewing was ready for its first Pilsner, there was really no question which beer it would be.

That homebrew challenge eventually became On The Pils.

Every JKB Beer starts with a question, "What if..."

What if we could make a Pilsner that wasn’t boring?

Pilsner is a simple, straightforward beer style. There aren’t loads of big flavours competing for attention. So if you get it wrong, you can end up with a pretty plain beer…or one that tastes off.

We didn’t want just another plain beer but we also wanted something that is still an easy choice anytime, anywhere.

So we added Munich malt, known for nutty flavour, to give the beer some depth. We used Motueka hops partway through the boil in what’s called a favour hop addition. This brings some lemon-lime flavour into the beer without making it truly hoppy.

The result?

A Pilsner that’s still simple, crisp and easy to drink, but has a little more going on than you might expect.

A surprisingly flavourful pilsner that goes down smooth and easy. Well balanced, refreshing, and still has enough depth to keep it interesting.
